Truly a beautiful piece. Poignant and raw… thank you for sharing, Lauren! I will share with my undergraduate students when we talk about identity development and how it is a complex and lifelong journey.
Wow. This is an utterly beautiful piece of writing. Thank you for sharing your fascinating story and inviting us in to marvel, explore and grieve with you. I’m beyond moved, and wish you a world of peace.
Stunning, Lauren. Thank you for your vulnerability and emotional intimacy. For inviting us into your family, and for letting us get a glimpse of your inner life. ♥️
Gorgeous writing. This story reminds me of my own mother who grew up in Hawai'i and picked things up with her toes, climbed trees with her brother and ate the mango's that fell from them.
Definitely a fresh view of life and family. I especially loved the ending. Birds only sing loud enough in the city to be heard over the noise but twitter elaborate melodies in quieter rural environments. We learn more about life in meditative serene surroundings than we do when we’re constantly preoccupied with what to do next or how to do the present task just right, jumbling up our thoughts into mental static.
thank you, this resonants so strongly for me, one who has been a long time a far distance away from their natural habitat. I think that like the birds, my voice sounds different here & there.

Such a beautiful story that sings: “They learned, long ago, to leave space for the unspoken.”

How do you say to your eldest daughter, I didn't have a mother. Don't you know I'm doing my best?
So many gut wrenching moments.
Thank you for sharing your grief. It broke my heart open.
Beautiful.
Just reading this takes me to a place I long to be, barefoot and exploring this planet's natural beauty.
BRAVA!!! <3 <3 Sitting in the middle seat all those years has given you an amazing perspective. Thank you for sharing it with us.
A lovely read.
This reads like a love letter to three sisters: Monachopsis, Sorrow, and Yearning. Thank you for honoring them with your words.
Gorgeous piece- thank you.
