A former student, H, who is a phenomenal writer, reached out to me with a question. How, she asked, do I learn to write again? H has finished her Ph.D and is teaching but like a lot of people once they graduate, she is feeling unmoored. She lives in a rural place without any discernible writing community and doesn’t really know how to find the passion for writing she once had. This sort of thing happens more than a lot of people want to admit. You can love a thing and lose it no matter how powerful that love is. Most writing advice boils down to sit down and write but when you sit down day after day after day, and the well is completely dry or you cannot connect to that part of yourself from whence your creativity rises, that advice is fairly useless.
