I’m teaching a class right now, AI in Fiction, we just completed our first week: never have I experienced such intensity of thought and feeling in the first week of a class.
My students certainly don’t all have the same points of view on AI and the role it’s assuming among us, but they speak with the urgency of people who recognize how high the stakes are.
Powerful. I’m a naive optimist who has to believe humans will make art for all time because we’re driven to, and somehow, somehow, one day that will matter more than capitalism.
I feel like the big point missing here is that AI wouldn’t exist without artists, because the engine would have nothing to draw from (so to speak). I’m also surprised by the blitheness with which she knowledges the ways in which artists will be harmed. I think about my child’s large collection of picture books, and the vastly different styles with which they have been illustrated, and cannot fathom AI creating the same meaning and richness.
Aubrey, this is great as always. I read recently that AI will soon be reading for audio books because they don't need to stretch, sip water, take a break or call in sick. I know changes will come whether we're ready or not but...generationally, I'm struggling with it.
The work of art in the age of post mechanical reproduction. Walter Benjamin’s seminal essay the first thing I thought of when reading this very ironic visual essay.
Beautiful 💕 thank you for creating this. I have a related piece on writing here: https://amyletter.substack.com/p/the-ethos-of-ai-is-a-void

I hope we all do.

Aubrey, always love seeing your pieces. This AI art has been giving me the heebie-jibbies for a while now (and I'm not even and artist)!
