On page 101, Ames compares trans folks to juvenile elephants in South Africa. Like the elephants, he says trans folks are “a lost generation. We have no elders, no stable groups, no one to teach us to countenance pain.” Consider this metaphor. What does it mean to be a human being who doesn’t have elders?
