I hear you about housing costs in expensive cities - the cost of housing has skyrocketed in Seattle since I moved here in 2013 and the only way I can say I'm a homeowner (rather than a lifelong renter) is that I married someone who made more money than me and had less debt. My husband moved here before me and got lucky enough to buy a place during one of the lowest points of the recession - when we were ready to look for a house together, he was able to sell his 2 bedroom condo for almost twice as much as he paid. What he recouped from his investment allowed us to put a sizeable down payment on a new house. I never could have achieved this on my own - no matter how long and hard I worked.
